Should I bring it with me or leave it at home? If bring it, what do I need to know?
Has the computer changed your life, too? Don't tell me about it!
So, you are thinking of taking your laptop onboard. If you do so, here are some guidelines to keep you out of trouble, so you can enjoy your vacation.

- Before booking, check with your travel agent if there is an internet access and what kind there is for the passengers who carry their laptops onboard the ship
- If the internet is available, find out the usage rates
- Check the compatibility. For example: if the wireless internet access (WI-FI) is available, check if your machine is WI-FI enabled. Before leaving home, make a backup of all your data on a media such as a CD or a memory stick, and leave it at home
- Business data - remove them all from the laptop onto a removable media and keep them safe at home. Unless you plan to work even on a cruise vacation, it is a really good idea not to carry them around. Why? Because in case your laptop gets stolen, I am sure the last thing you want is the potential crooks to have access to financial reports or classified projects of your company, etc. So, remove them from the hard drive and when you come home, put them back on and you are back on track.
- If you still want your business data with you all the time, consider securing them with the encryption software
- Secure the login with a password. The Windows password will do in most cases, but you may also consider using an advanced option such as the BIOS password. If you don't know how to use this feature, get an expert to assist you.
- Since you secured the access with a password, do not leave a peace of paper with your password on it in a carrying case, or in any other place where it's easily found.
- If you leave your laptop out of sight for longer time, consider using a safety cable by which you can attach it to a heavy, non movable object
- Be careful at public places like airports, etc. Do not leave your laptop out of sight.
