How Big They Can Get?

Thursday, 24 July 2008 08:15 by Tony

As we all know Royal Caribbean introduced new class of mega ships Oasis of the Seas. This 220,000 tons monster will accommodate the crowd of 5,400 and it’s the biggest cruise ship on the oceans.

It is noticeable that each year ships getting bigger. They are already huge and by many opinions ridiculously big. Imagine what it looks like when 5,000 people invade some small Mediterranean port. Not nice...

And what about onboard amenities?

Sizes like this open whole set of new possibilities. How about onboard horse tracks? A baseball field? Maybe, Central Park is already there on Oasis...

Nah. If you ask me I want to see airport runway on top deck.  Why not? They already built airplane carriers for Navy. Imagine that your flight lands directly on your ship and spare you from wasting precious vacation time on the airports. How cool that is!  Imagine how flexible disembarkation would be.

Ok, I admit there would be certain problems with noise and vibrations on pool deck, but come on naval architects: Give us your ingenious solutions.

With ships of these sizes, possibilities are endless J

Here is an illustration of how they grow each year:
