10 REASONS WHY NOT TO WORK ON CRUISE SHIPS
-
Hard work:
Well, it is
something that some people have no problem with at all but on the other
hand some other people are terrified of 12 or more daily hours on work.
Of course, it may vary from position to position but some duties can be
stretched trough all day long and, yes, sometimes it's not easy. Because
of that you have to know best for yourself before making a decision to
apply. If you are not too old or too young and in good health you will
have no problem with performing it. It is different mater will you like
it or not. Like I said, only you know. Think about it before making a
decision to go on ship.
-
Discipline and regulations:
Personally I felt sometimes like in army. If you cannot stand it keep away.
Strict compliance with personal hygiene regulations is a requirement abroad the
ships
-
Accommodations is sometimes in very small
cabins without windows with three or four roommates. Higher ranked positions has better
accommodations.
-
Limited access to ship facilities
like pool, gym, bars, sports, etc. On some ships crew has its own pool and bar,
but generally speaking passenger facilities are prohibited or limited for crew
use.
-
Zero tolerance
to bad attitude, heavy alcohol drinking, drug use, fighting. Do that and you
are fired.
-
Flirting with passengers
is strictly prohibited. However, you are allowed to have girlfriend or
boyfriend among crew.
-
Home sickness
(nostalgia). Crew are away from their home for at least seven or more month.
For some people this is quite hard. Although there is several ways to keep in
touch with folks back home ( telephone, emails, etc.) you have to realize that
you will be isolated from your family, friends and other things back home.
-
Sea sickness.
This is not to often but for some people it is problem.
-
Ability to work
under pressure sometimes is required.
-
High tolerance toward cultural and mentality differences between
passengers and coworkers. When many people work hard together sometimes it
leads to conflicts. You are required to keep out arguments and report any
problem to your supervisor.
