Frequently Asked Questions

1. What about Passport or Visa? Do I need it?

A: Yes you need to have a valid Passport and Visa, except in case you are the U.S. citizen, of course. Upon signing the contract , the company will send you "the Letter of Employment", which you need for getting the U.S. Visa. Note that you will be issued "the Seaman and traveling visa" C1 and D type. This will allow you to work on ship and NOT in the United States.

2. How much money will I earn?

A: This depends on many aspects, like the position you hold, what company do you work for, how much experience you have or have you been promoted. Normally you can expect between 1000 to 6000 USD (only the lowest positions like cleaners and dishwashers are paid less). It's important to say that this is tax-free salary , and that you don't pay meals and room.

3. What is duration of the contract?

A: Usually between six and nine months, depending on position.

4. Do I need to have previous cruise ship experience?

A: Most employers do not require previous ship experience, but having it is for sure a big advantage.

5. How can I be in contact with my family back home?

A: Ship is equipped with a satellite telephone system but it is not recommended for usage because it is too expensive. The best and easiest way to call home is to get out in ports, where public phones are available almost everywhere. You can also normally send and receive mail trough the company's mail system by using your crew ID.

6. Do I need a medical examination?

A: Yes, the cruise line will provide you one, or the Employment Agency will refer you to a medical institute to have it done.
You should be in decent health condition!

7. Is there medical care on board?

A: Yes, there are Doctors, Nurses and Assistants available for the staff.

8. Are there any age or nationality restrictions ?

A: Minimum age is usually between 18 and 23. Most companies employ people from all over the world irrespective of their nationality, religion, sex or marital status.

9. Will I be sharing a cabin?

A: Yes, usually 1 -3 roommate for entry-level positions. Single rooms are available for higher and senior positions.

10. Are there laundry facilities on board?

A: Yes, for all crew members

11. Do I wear a uniform?

A. For most positions - Yes,
and the company will provide you with it

12. Can I use the public/passenger areas?

A: Depends on position and rank, sometimes you are allowed but with some limitations and rules

13. Am I allowed getting off at every port?

A: Yes, when you are off duty

14. Do I have to participate on boat drills?

A: Yes, all crew and passengers must attend drills. You will be provided with necessary instructions and duties in respect to this issue.
